The Graduate School and Research Institute FEBRI in the Faculty of Economics and Business has a PhD position on the topic of place-based economic development in Europe. Project Description The EU is committed to reducing regional economic disparities and promoting inclusive growth, but has not been very successful in achieving this goal. Some regions continue to lag behind while others thrive. This project aims to explore the underlying causes of these gaps and develop innovative strategies to strengthen the EU’s regional policy framework. The focus will be on place-based economic development, emphasizing the unique strengths and opportunities of different types of regions. This means that the project deals with topics such as cross-regional cooperation, inter-regional alliances and smart specialization. The PhD position is part of the FEB Institute’s “Innovation and Organization” research program. We offer a truly international environment (our working language is English and we currently have more than 15 different nationalities on our staff). The project will be supervised by Prof. Florian Noseleit, Dr. Daniël Speldekamp and Dr. Benito Giordano. The mentoring team has a strong track record of publications in leading academic journals. Functionally ideal candidates are ambitious and motivated to pursue a career in research and/or a senior professional position at a leading university, where a PhD is an advantage. The program allows for both qualitative and quantitative methods (or mixed methods), so candidates must have strong analytical skills and training in at least one of these methods. In addition, candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English and have received or will receive a Master’s degree with honors. PhD candidates should have a background in economics, economic geography, human geography, political science, international business, or a related field (e.g., strategic management, planning, urban studies). In addition, candidates should have a strong interest in regional economic development and policy. Job Opportunities In accordance with the Collective Labor Contract of the University of the Netherlands, we offer you a minimum monthly salary of €2,910 and a maximum monthly salary of €3,707. Depending on the gross salary, you will receive an additional vacation allowance of 8% in May and an additional year-end bonus of 8.3% in December each year. Temporary full-time employment is for a period of four years, provided that the assessment at the end of the first year is favorable. PhD candidates spend 20% of their time teaching in years 2-4.
