Project Postdoctoral Fellow: Hospitals in an Algorithmic Society
Project description
Have you ever wondered about the impact of artificial intelligence, algorithms and other digital technologies on the way we organize healthcare within hospitals and in the broader organizational ecosystem? Do you have a drive to figure out how hospital policymakers and healthcare professionals navigate changing power dynamics and tensions in the context of the algorithmic society? Then a postdoctoral position in our algorithmic society is exactly what you’ve been looking for!
Your position and project
In this project, you will investigate how new digital technologies are restructuring ambulatory care at a top clinical (non-academic) hospital, including the role of the hospital as an organization in adapting to and driving the organizational ecosystem for digital transformation, and the adaptation of healthcare professionals. The core premise of this project is the co-evolution of people, technology and values. The central question you will address is: How are patterns of institutional and individual decision-making power shifting in ambulatory care as a result of the introduction of new technologies? The project will explore multiple dimensions of three related studies:
Hospitals in the wider ecosystem: how do hospital decision-makers deal with the tensions arising from new digital business models in their ecosystem?
Healthcare professionals: how do healthcare professionals perceive the advantages of new technologies, for example in the design of new outpatient departments? What types of invisible work are not captured by new technologies? How are these professionals adapting to the new technology-focused outpatient clinic design?
Bridging the micro and meso: How do tensions or mismatches between the healthcare environment and the private sector organizations delivering new technologies manifest themselves in clinical care?
Together with a group of researchers, you will pave the way for understanding how ambulatory care is moving from the hospital consulting room to the network of people and companies that produce, collect and aggregate data, and develop algorithms.
In this program, you will conduct in-depth case studies in outpatient clinics. The selection of cases can be based on retrospective and/or interview studies. You will study digitization processes in different contexts, especially the integration of digital services into decision-making processes and workflows. On the basis of empirical work, you will develop concepts to understand the range of interactions between people and organizations that these systems can or cannot achieve.
The position will be covered by the Department of Organizational Studies at the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences in Tilburg.
The project is part of the Gravity Program “Public Values in the Algorithmic Society” (algosoc). The Gravity Program is an initiative of the Dutch government to support research excellence in the Netherlands. The program provides funding to research groups that have the potential to be among the world’s best in their field. algosoc is a response to society’s urgent need for an informed perspective on automated decision-making. Funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science over a 10-year period, the Algosoc program’s research will be grounded in a deeper understanding of the systemic changes that automated decision-making brings to core public institutions, to society, and to how public values are realized. The research will focus on three areas: justice, health and media. The program brings together researchers from five Dutch universities (Amsterdam, Utrecht, Tilburg, Delft and Rotterdam) in the fields of law, communication sciences, computer sciences, philosophy, public governance, STS, economics and social sciences. the algosoc community will work together to develop the solutions needed for the design of governance frameworks to complement the technology-driven initiatives in the algorithmic society.
The current position is part of the algosoc health department, located in Tilburg. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will have the unique opportunity to help develop a research program through your own research initiative. In close cooperation with other researchers and under the guidance of leading scholars from various disciplines, you will be encouraged and supported in carrying out your project.
