PhD Scholarships in Data-Driven Operation of Future Power Systems Led by Active Distribution Grids Project Description Do you want to contribute to paving a path to a 100% Renewable Energy Sources (RES) based power system, and are you looking for a career in research and development or academia? Then we have an exciting opportunity for you. During your PhD, you will contribute to the development of novel operational methods for future power systems and derive equivalent models for active distribution networks (ADN). The PhD program is part of a new research program funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark in the field of independent green research. As we transition to a power system that relies exclusively on renewable energy sources, the existing system is changing dramatically, challenging current operating models. Generation is moving to the distribution grid and new users are being connected who have new dynamic behaviors but also provide new means of control. As a result, distribution networks are evolving into active distribution networks with the potential to make a significant contribution to the operation of the power system. Traditionally, transmission system operators have used a top-down approach to run the power system. In this project, we will explore the potential benefits of deviating from this approach by running the power system in a non-hierarchical manner through true distributed control. We believe this approach can improve efficiency, stability and resilience. As a PhD student, you will contribute directly to realizing these ambitions and help us push the limits of state-of-the-art technology. As a PhD researcher in Wind Energy and Energy Systems at DTU, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the success of the world-leading Energy Systems department, which puts knowledge to work through cutting-edge research, innovation and technology development. In this sector, we have an internationally leading research environment and prioritize strong interdisciplinary collaborations within DTU, with leading international universities and institutions, and with private companies. We focus on the development of future energy systems with wind energy as the backbone and collaborate with the industry as a whole. You will join the international research team in the Distributed Energy Systems department and the working language will be English.
offer requirements
Responsibilities and qualifications As a PhD student, you will work closely with other project participants as well as other PhD students in the department working on related topics. The main goal of this PhD project is to develop distributed control algorithms that contribute to ensuring the safe and stable operation of 100% renewable power systems. Your main task is to derive accurate and scalable equivalent models for active distribution networks Validate and test the equivalent models through time-domain simulations and experiments in our Integrated Energy Systems Laboratory (SYSLAB) Develop a truly decentralized control approach for future power systems with predominantly active distribution grids Validate and test the control approach in simulations and experiments in the Integrated Energy Systems Laboratory During the first two months of the PhD project , you will work with your supervisor to develop a detailed project plan. The successful candidate must have a Master’s degree in data science and a willingness to learn about electrical systems; or a Master’s degree in electrical engineering and a strong interest in data science and optimization. In addition, as a successful candidate you have excellent grades in your Master’s program You are a committed and inquisitive person Ability to work in a project team and to take responsibility for your own research goals Ability to communicate and report fluently in English It is an added advantage if you have some of the following additional technical qualifications:Ability to present results in technical reports and to write scientific papers for publication in international journals Strong programming Ability to work effectively with data and apply statistics Experience in the field of optimization and machine learning You must also meet the entry requirements for the DTU PhD program. You must have obtained a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS credits) or a similar degree at an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.
