Postdoctoral position in pea genome editingProject DescriptionPlant Breeding DepartmentAbout the PositionWe are seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher to join a project on the reduction of major anti-nutritional factors (ANFs) in pea (Pisum sativum L.) seeds using CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing techniques. The research focuses on the development of pea mutant strains using tissue culture-dependent and tissue culture-independent genome editing approaches to establish transgene-free genome editing for pea with the ultimate goal of improving the nutritional quality and taste of pea seeds while maintaining plant health. The project involves collaboration with industry partners, including Lantmännen, and provides an opportunity to develop improved pea varieties for sustainable food production in Sweden. The project is mainly funded by SLU Grogrund (Center for Plant Breeding for Edible Crops), which connects academia and industry to promote sustainability and competitiveness in Swedish agriculture. Your profileWe are looking for a motivated candidate with experience in Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Applicants must have a PhD in biology, biotechnology, plant science, molecular genetics or a related field. Required skills and experience:In vitro regeneration of peas or legumesCRISPR vector construction and genome editingBasic bioinformatics skills (e.g. gRNA design, NGS data analysis)Strong statistical knowledge of experimental data analysisProficiency in English (spoken and written)Ability to work independently and collaborativelyOther desirable skills and experience:Use of RNP-based or other transgene-free genome editing Methods using particle bombardment methodsUse of nanotechnology to study terpenoids or secondary metabolites as evidenced by publicationsWe are looking for candidates who are innovative, self-motivated, independent problem-solvers with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. As this position is for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for individuals who have been awarded a PhD for no more than three years. About usWith a changing climate and a growing global population, we face major challenges in the supply of food, industrial raw materials and energy. Meeting the growing demand for biological raw materials requires making plant production more environmentally friendly and energy efficient. At the Department of Plant Breeding at Alnarp SLU, we conduct research, education and innovative extension work that is strategically important to address these challenges. We use a wide range of traditional and modern breeding techniques, from field trials and genetic diversity assessment to genetic, omics, biotechnological, biochemical and physiological methods. In the Biotechnology Department, we focus primarily on genetic improvement of important traits through genome editing.
