Stress for postdocs
Project description
Stress is the “buzzword” of modern life and affects all aspects of daily life. Mental and cardiometabolic disorders can be triggered when stress occurs frequently, lasts for long periods of time and/or overwhelms people’s resources. The NWE Gravity project “Stress in Action” utilizes rapidly evolving technologies and big data analytics to move stress research from the laboratory to everyday life. We will utilize new insights gained from dynamic assessment and experimental validation studies from a large long-term cohort in the Netherlands to build a theoretical framework for stress in everyday life. This will lead to a new understanding of 1) how responses to daily life stress arise from temporal dynamic interactions between environmental and individual-specific factors, 2) how daily life stress can be reliably measured in real time for a given individual, and 3) how and when potentially beneficial mechanisms of the stress response are transformed into adverse effects on psychological and cardiometabolic health. This will contribute to the development of novel monitoring and intervention strategies to track and minimize daily life stress and its impact on health.
We invite you to apply for a part-time postdoctoral position to work on theories of daily life stress.
Building on the existing literature, we will create a new scalable framework that conceptualizes stress as the result of ongoing interactions between primary environmental exposures and four subsystems (mood, cognitive appraisal and regulation strategies, physiological responses, and behavioral responses). These interactions span multiple (short- or long-term) time scales. Theory development will be based primarily on 1) existing theories of stress, 2) detailed systematic literature reviews, and 3) analysis of existing cohort data. Empirically based theories will identify specific interactions between subsystems and sensitive patterns of interactions between stress-related subsystems over time. By examining the interactions between time, the individual, and the environment, new avenues will be opened for the development of data-driven, individualized, and programmed stress reduction strategies.
