The Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine (IKOM) announces a three-year PhD scholarship in the field of Women’s Health and Epidemiology. The Trendelag IV Health Survey (HUNT4 study) is one of the few population-based studies in Norway to ask women about persistent pelvic pain. The aim of the PhD project is to use data from HUNT to investigate whether adverse childhood experiences and psychological distress increase the risk of persistent pelvic pain and to explore associations with pain more generally. The main objective of the project is to increase knowledge of the causes of persistent pelvic pain in order to improve understanding of the condition and thereby improve prevention and treatment strategies. The position will be associated with the HUNT Women’s Health and Pelvic Pain program. The PhD candidate will work in a research environment at St. Olafs Hospital and the North Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NNUST), where the researcher has a background in clinical specialties such as gynecology, physical therapy, psychology and epidemiology/statistics. The local research team also works closely with the Women’s Health Research Group at UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, researchers at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in Oslo, and British researchers The position is filled by the Central Norway Regional Health Directorate (CNRHD). The position is funded by a liaison committee between the Regional Health Authority of Central Norway (RHA) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The PhD candidate will be part of the research group “Traumatic Life Events and Women’s Health”, which is led by Cecilie Therese Hagemann, Associate Professor and Consultant/Gynecologist. Hagemann will be the primary mentor for the doctoral student. The position will be a full-time, three-year position, but may also be a part-time position combined with clinical work. The position is attached to the Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine (IKOM) and is based at IKOM in Trondheim.The desired start date is no later than June 1, 2025.The position is open to all students. An earlier start date may be negotiated.

The primary purpose of the PhD fellowship is to qualify candidates for future research positions. Applicants must have a background in medical education or have completed a master’s degree (equivalent to 120 credits) in medicine and health sciences, psychology, public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, or other related field. Master’s degree students may also apply, but the master’s degree must have been earned and documented prior to the start of the tenure and no later than April 30, 2025. Applicants must have a strong academic background in their previous studies, and the grade point average in the master’s program or equivalent must be equivalent to a grade of B or better on the NDSU grading scale. If the applicant does not have a letter grade in his/her previous studies, he/she must have an equally good academic background. Consideration may be given to an applicant who has a poor academic record but who can demonstrate special fitness for the Ph.D. program. Applicants must meet the requirements for admission to the doctoral program in the School of Medicine. Excellent written and oral English language skills. If you are unable to demonstrate A2 level proficiency in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish at the time of employment, you must have completed at least 15 credits of Norwegian language courses by the end of the employment period. The Norwegian National University of Technology will facilitate this. Appointment will be made in accordance with the Regulations of the Universities and Colleges Act (Universities and Colleges Regulations) and the Regulations of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) on the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Artistic Development Work for the general criteria of the position. Preferred criteria include experience in quantitative statistical analysis and epidemiology, familiarity with statistical software such as SPSS, STATA, SAS or R, publications as first author or co-author, experience in academic writing in English, knowledge of a Scandinavian language, and clinical work experience in gynecology, pain medicine, general practice, physical therapy or psychology. To complete your doctoral degree (PhD), you must be able to: work independently, work in a structured manner, set goals and develop a plan to achieve them, present and discuss your research with other professionals, engage in feedback and contribute constructively, work constructively under pressure or adversity, show curiosity and a strong intellectual curiosity about the subject matter, analyze data, consider different points of view and draw reasoned conclusions, and be flexible in adjusting project plans as needed.
