The university has approximately 47,000 students and more than 8,800 faculty members in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition. Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We see gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset. Work assignment: The PhD program consists of 240 credits (equivalent to four years of full-time study). The program formally ends with the doctoral student’s public defense of his/her printed doctoral dissertation. The primary obligation of the doctoral degree holder is the successful completion of the third stage of education, culminating in the award of the doctoral degree. The regulations governing the appointment of full-time doctoral students are set out in Chapter 5, Sections 1-7 of the Higher Education Regulations. PhD students are expected to be actively involved in the research and teaching activities of the Department and may be required to carry out Departmental duties, beginning with teaching, which constitutes approximately 20% of their full-time hours. The research will be carried out within the field of Economic Geography and linked to the research projects “Geographies of Transformation of Urban Infrastructure – Understanding the Global Diffusion of Innovations in Sanitation (GEO-SAN)” and “Towards a Circular Urban Water Economy – Evaluating the Global Scale-up Trajectories of Four Innovative Water Reuse Solutions (GLOBALWATER)”. The common goal of these projects is to understand how innovative urban water treatment and reuse solutions are developed, scaled up and diffused in different spatial contexts. PhD candidates are expected to engage in geographies of socio-technical transformation and analyze global innovation trajectories related to water treatment and reuse in centralized (large-scale network-based) and decentralized (modular, small-scale) systems, respectively. These projects use a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative in-depth case studies in high- and middle-income lighthouse cities (e.g., EU, US, India, South Africa) with global system mapping using Socio-Technical Configuration Analysis (STCA). The position will include the collection of primary data through fieldwork and interview activities in upper-middle income cities.
