The Department of Mathematics conducts research and provides undergraduate and graduate education in mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. The department has about 130 employees, including about 40 PhD students. The department has three research programs: Analysis and Probability, Algebra and Geometry, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics.

Both are general positions, i.e., the dissertation involves an area of mathematics for which we have suitable supervisors among our (assistant, associate, or full) professors.

The duties of the PhD student are primarily directed towards his/her own research education for a period of four years. To a limited extent (up to 20%, i.e. about 80 contact hours per year), PhD students may also have responsibilities in other departments, mainly teaching undergraduate courses.

RequirementsTo meet the admission requirements for the PhD program, you must

hold a master’s degree (stage 2) in mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics, or
have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, of which at least 60 credits are for a master’s degree, including at least 15 credits of independent projects, or
have otherwise gained substantially equivalent knowledge.

In addition, the candidate should have good spoken and written English.

A concise description of research interests, previous experience, and future expectations, as well as a statement of preference for (one or more) areas of research or potential mentors (no prior contact is necessary),
Curriculum Vitae,
Copies of diplomas and proof of grades,
A copy of the Master’s thesis (or preliminary outline), and
contact details of up to three referees. We do not expect any references to be included in the application.

The regulations for doctoral students are contained in Chapter 5, Sections 1-7 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the regulations and guidelines of Uppsala University.

The position is temporary according to Chapter 5, Section 7 of the Higher Education Act. Start date: September 1, 2025 or as agreed. Place of work Uppsala
