Introduction to the PhD Program in EconomicsDo you have a Master’s degree in Economics with honors and want to immerse yourself in your discipline through independent research? If so, you may be just the person we are looking for! The Department of Economics is looking for a committed, curious, and ambitious PhD candidate for a three-year term. This is a unique opportunity for you to contribute to high-quality international research on a range of economic topics. We are looking for candidates who wish to carry out research in one of the Department’s research areas. Our main research areas are applied microeconomics, such as public economics, political economy and behavioral economics. Other areas include environmental and resource economics, development economics, international economics, macroeconomics and finance. We currently have 23 academic staff, 700 students and 3 administrative staff. You will be part of a vibrant and inclusive group of PhD students in the department. Through the PhD program, you will also interact and engage with PhD students from other departments in the School of Economics and Management. Your immediate supervisor will be the Chair of the Department of Economics.

The primary goal of this PhD position is competence development and research training, and you will be admitted to the PhD program in the School of Economics and Management. As a PhD student, your task will be to carry out high-quality research, to participate in organized courses including high-level training in relevant topics and research methods, and to present your research results at national and international scientific conferences. The Faculty of Economics aims to conduct high-level international research. Contacts with foreign universities and researchers are an important part of this, and PhD students are encouraged to study abroad for one or two semesters during their degree. Be prepared for changes in job responsibilities after employment. To be qualified for this position, you must: have completed (or be in the process of completing) a master’s degree or a second degree (equivalent to 120 ECTS) in economics or finance. Have a good academic background with an average grade of B or higher in the grading scale of the NLM or equivalent for the Master’s degree. If you do not have letter grades in your previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. Have completed several subjects with a solid knowledge of econometric methodology. Be proficient in English. Master’s students may apply, but must have earned a Master’s degree and produce supporting documentation prior to taking up employment. In accordance with the new Act relating to universities and university colleges and the related regulations enacted on August 1, 2024, the National Teacher Training University has opted, for a transitional period (employment decisions for positions recruited prior to August 1, 2025), to use the provisions of the old regulation No. 102 of January 31, 2006 on the terms and conditions of employment for the positions of post-doctoral researcher, researcher, scientific assistant, and expert candidate. Completion of a doctoral degree is demanding. To be competent, you should ideally be: able to work independently, able to set goals, develop plans to achieve them and work hard to achieve them, creative and inventive, able to work constructively under pressure or in adversity, able to discuss the preliminary results of your research and to take into account feedback from colleagues.
