The Department of Informatics has an opening for a PhD researcher in algorithms. The position is for a fixed term of 3 years, with the possibility of career-enhancing work (e.g., a teaching position in the department) in the 4th year. The position is funded by the University of Bergen.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Computer Science or Mathematics or equivalent. Master’s students may apply as long as they have completed their Master’s exit exam by July 31, 2025. Having earned a Master’s degree is a condition of employment. A solid background in theoretical computer science and/or mathematics and research experience in these areas (e.g., as part of a master’s thesis) is preferred. Published papers in top-tier journals in theoretical computer science (e.g., FOCS/STOC/SODA/ICALP/LICS) or AI (e.g., ICML/AAAI/IJCAI/NeurIPS) conferences, and relevant research experience are preferred. Experience with algorithmic competitions (e.g. ACM ICPC) is preferred. Applicants must be able to work independently, in an organized manner, and demonstrate good collaboration skills. Applicants must be proficient in written and verbal English. Personal qualities and interpersonal relationships will be emphasized. Research experience, ambition and potential will also be considered when assessing candidates. The University of Bergen is subject to the regulations of the Export Control System. The total annual salary is NOK 540,500. The salary will increase further depending on the number of years of service in the position. Participation in the Norwegian Civil Service Pension Fund.
