The Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC), Tampere University invites applications for the position of PhD researcher in the area of satellite-based positioning and integration with Geographic Information System (GIS) data.
Position description
The PhD researcher will be involved in activities related to wireless satellite-based positioning in a multinational research project and will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC), University of Tampere. The research work will focus on enhancing GNSS positioning in the presence of interference using 3D Geographic Information System (GIS) data; possible approaches include, but are not limited to, Bayesian estimation and data fusion, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques, and collaborative localization methods for threat localization, among others. The researcher will be involved in all PhD-related activities required for the PhD thesis (attending lectures and writing publications) and will also be involved in writing deliverables (approximately once a year), regular project meetings with the steering committee, and a variety of seminars related to the project. Publications will be very important during the project. The researcher will be mentored by a team with deep expertise in satellite wireless positioning.

Requirements
To apply for the PhD researcher position, you must have obtained a Master’s degree in a relevant engineering field (relevant engineering fields include: digital signal processing, electrical engineering, GNSS, wireless communications, etc.).
Applicants must have strong Matlab and Python programming skills and be willing to expand their skills with the Matlab programming toolbox and Python machine learning toolbox.
Basic knowledge of GNSS is a must; additional knowledge of GIS, wireless communications, digital signal processing, and machine learning is desirable.
A willingness to work hard and learn more about the fascinating research field of satellite positioning, the ability to work independently and in a team, and an interest in a research career are other skills that are highly desired for this position.
