The Department of Quantitative Economics at the Faculty of Business and Economics at Maastricht University is recruiting for a PhD position in the field of game theory and/or mathematical economics. The expected field of work for the PhD position is game theory and/or mathematical economics. The position will be fully funded for four years with a modest teaching load of up to 25%, according to the NLU labor agreement. The start date is September 1, 2025. The Ph.D. student’s research interests should be aligned with a staff member in the department. The position gives preference to candidates interested in non-cooperative games (e.g., Bayesian games and games of strategic form with infinite action space). However, candidates with broader interests in game theory, economic theory, or mathematical economics are also welcome to apply. Specific research proposals are welcome, and may include suggestions for collaboration with specific staff members, but are not required.

Candidates are required to hold a master’s degree (or be nearing completion) in mathematics, theoretical economics, theoretical physics, operations research, or the equivalent. Strong mathematical skills are required. Proficiency in English (oral and written) is required. Candidates should ideally start on September 1st. We offer a 4-year position. Our department has a large, culturally diverse PhD community that welcomes enthusiastic and talented new PhD students. PhD positions are paid positions with minimal teaching responsibilities.

As a PhD student in the Faculty of Business and Economics, you will be employed at the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you excellent employment conditions. The position is graded according to the UFO PhD profile and offers a monthly salary of €2901.00 in the first year and €3707.00 in the fourth year (based on a full-time working week of 38 hours). In addition to the monthly salary, there is a vacation allowance of 8.0% and a year-end bonus of 8.3%. The duration of the employment contract is 18 months and the scope of work is 1.0 full-time. It may be extended for a further 2.5 years subject to a favourable assessment. For this, you will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and four additional public holidays per year, namely Carnival Monday, Carnival Tuesday, Good Friday and Emancipation Day. If you choose to accrue compensatory time, an additional 12 days will be added.
