Our society relies on machines and engines, and life itself is the same. Molecular motors are widespread throughout biological systems, where their complex structures and precise functions drive the fundamental processes of cells. The exciting challenge we now face is: can we construct such motors from the bottom up at the nanoscale?
In the ERC-funded project MembraneMachines, our goal is to use DNA nanotechnology to redesign and construct these extraordinary biological nanomachines within lipid membranes. We are seeking a highly motivated experimental researcher to join our team and participate in this 4-year PhD project.
The successful candidate will take the lead in designing and building the next generation of DNA-based nanoscale motors (particularly translational motors) embedded in lipid bilayers. This includes:
– Designing and folding DNA nanostructures.
– Manipulating lipid bilayers and lipid vesicles.
– Using single-channel electrophysiology to manipulate and control the motors.
– Investigating interactions with lipid bilayers and vesicles.
– Using single-molecule localization fluorescence microscopy to observe motor movement and evaluate performance.
offer requirements
We are looking for candidates who meet the following conditions:
– A Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or related disciplines.
– Strong interest in nanotechnology, synthetic biology, and/or membrane biophysics.
– Excellent English written and oral communication skills.
– A collaborative and curious mindset.
– Priority given to candidates with experience in biological or solid-state nanopores, DNA nanotechnology, single-molecule microscopy, or programming/data analysis (e.g., Python, MATLAB), but this is not a strict requirement.
offer benefits/salary
– A 4-year fully funded PhD position supported by the ERC Starting Grant.
– Initial 1-year contract, extendable after positive evaluation.
– Stimulating research environment at KU Leuven and the Arenberg Doctoral School.
– Flexible starting date, but no later than October 1, 2025.
