Being a PhD student means being fully engaged in a research project under the supervision of an experienced researcher and following an individual study plan. Obtaining a PhD requires the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education. Hanna Brauner’s laboratory is located in the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM), an excellent environment for immunology research. The proximity of the laboratory to the Karolinska University Hospital also facilitates collaboration with clinicians from different fields. The Hannah Brauner lab is associated with the Liv Eidsmo group and is part of the CMM Tissue Inflammation Research Constellation. We seek a highly motivated PhD student to join the Hannah Brauner team to work on novel pathogenic mechanisms and prognostic markers in patients with cutaneous lymphoma. The aim of this project is to provide knowledge to improve the survival and health of patients with cutaneous lymphoma through a combination of experimental and epidemiological studies. Most patients with cutaneous lymphoma do not have severe disease, but approximately 25% develop aggressive disease with high mortality from unknown causes. Cutaneous lymphoma is a subtype of lymphoma and therefore its trajectory over time can be studied. In these efforts, our ultimate goal is to increase basic knowledge about the pathogenesis of cutaneous lymphomas, to help identify patients at risk for aggressive disease earlier, and to evaluate the efficacy of different therapeutic approaches. We have access to unique clinical information, and we will use a truly translational approach to research, utilizing state-of-the-art methods to understand key clinical questions. In addition, we will conduct registry studies of cutaneous lymphomas based on the National Lymphoma Registry and other national health registries to investigate prognostic factors and late effects. As such, the position includes epidemiologic work and experimental work, primarily using clinical materials and cell lines, but also potentially using animal experiments. Key experimental techniques include in vitro assessment of immune cell phenotype and function, advanced flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, advanced spatial profiling and single cell RNA sequencing.
