Karolinska Institutet of Medicine Recruitment for PhD Position in Receptor Pharmacology of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis

job description

PhD student position in receptor pharmacology of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis
Project description
Do you want to contribute to the improvement of human health?
Becoming a Ph.D. student means being fully engaged in a research project under the guidance of an experienced researcher and following an individual study plan. Obtaining a PhD requires the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education.
Research Teams
Successful candidates will join a team led by Shane Wright, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. His team studies the pharmacology of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), an important drug target. The overarching theme of the lab is to better understand and utilize GPCR signaling to design safer drugs for patients.
Ph.D. Project and Ph.D. Responsibilities
This Ph.D. project will investigate the role of GPCR in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a form of inflammatory steatohepatitis for which there are currently only limited pharmacological treatment options. The research will utilize organ models of MASH to screen compounds against GPCR to identify novel targets for disease intervention. The PhD student will utilize subcellular biosensors to elucidate the similarities and differences between different targets to better understand the molecular basis of anti-MASH action. Histology-based approaches will translate molecular findings into functional mechanisms that will be used for further validation. At the end of this project, we will have discovered new disease targets and deepened our understanding of the signaling networks that address the MASH disease signature. Students are expected to play a significant role in hypothesis formulation, experimental design, experimentation, data analysis, presentation of results at meetings and conferences, and manuscript writing. Students are responsible for adhering to the general regulations and time schedule of the PhD program.
