Job description

The PhD position Healthy Cities is part of a research project initiated by the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) called Healthy Living Services: towards a sustainable Healthy Society (HLAS) by improving lifestyles, societies and living environments. The center is part of the Section for Architecture and Urban History and Theory at the Department of Art, Architecture and Landscape History at the University of Groningen. The selected candidate will be employed by the faculty and will assume all duties related to the PhD program, including a small teaching load. The candidate will work closely with other PhD students and researchers in the HLAS program. In addition, the program offers a unique opportunity to work in an international environment and gain valuable research experience.

A research-based Master’s or Master’s degree in a field related to the program. Excellent academic writing skills in Dutch and English. Background in (architectural) history. In-depth knowledge of healthy city concepts. Architectural research skills (e.g. work experience in an architectural office). Experience working on neighborhood-scale urban improvement projects. Candidate understands how to work with and lead teams of professionals from diverse backgrounds and expertise. Experience with co-creation of projects and civic engagement.

Under the Dutch University Collective Labor Agreement, the University of Groningen offers the following: a monthly salary of €2,901 gross in the first year, depending on the full-time position, and up to €3,707 gross in the final year. Vacation allowance of 8% of gross annual income. 8.3% year-end allowance. 1.0 FTE temporary appointment for four years. Candidates will initially be appointed for a period of 12 months. After six months, an assessment of the candidate’s results and the progress of the PhD program will be made in order to decide on the continuation of the appointment. It is expected that the Ph.D. candidate will carry out a total of 0.4 FTE in the second, third and fourth years of the appointment. Good work-life balance.
