Job description
The Department of Management, Society and Communication (MSC) at Copenhagen Business School is currently recruiting a PhD scholarship position in the direction of ‘Business and the Global South’, with an expected enrollment date of September 1, 2026.
MSC conducts interdisciplinary research, focusing on the relationship between business and society, exploring the conditions and practices of responsible management, organization and governance in a globalized world, with particular attention to perspectives from culture, communication and discourse.
This PhD project examines how companies shape economic, political and social transformations in the Global South amid constantly changing geopolitical landscapes. Possible research themes include:
– Multinational corporations, global value chains and their role in development
– Late industrialization, industrial policy and state-business relations
– Human rights, labor relations, labor regimes and the role of local communities
– Entrepreneurship, innovation and private sector development
– Corporate involvement in aid and humanitarian interventions
– The impact of digitalization on work, livelihoods and labor markets
– Business sustainability, green transitions and climate-resilient development
– Decolonizing development: business, geopolitics and Southern knowledge
Applicants are encouraged to consider broader geopolitical forces, such as global trade relations, resource politics, foreign investment, climate governance, North-South relational transformations and the influence of emerging economies.
Successful candidates will become members of the Centre for Business and Development Studies (CBDS).
Copenhagen Business School’s three-year PhD program offers the opportunity to conduct research under the supervision of professors, supplemented by relevant PhD courses. The program is highly internationalized, supporting participation in international academic conferences and visits to other research institutions. CBS PhD graduates are highly regarded in academia, research institutions, government and business sectors.

The department gives priority to applicants with excellent university grades. Applicants must meet the following conditions:
– Hold a master’s degree (in accordance with the Danish 3+2 model).
– Master’s thesis grade equivalent to 10 on the Danish 7-point scale or comparable level.
– Weighted average grade for bachelor’s and master’s degrees at least 8.2 on the Danish 7-point scale; or master’s grade alone at least 9.5. If not met, documentation showing top 40% class ranking can be provided.
– Have a background in social sciences or related fields.
– Have completed the master’s program before the application deadline.
– Possess high-level academic English reading and writing skills.
Application materials must include a five-page PhD project description covering:
– Presentation of an original research question
– Description of preliminary theoretical framework and methods
– Presentation of proposed empirical material
– Three-year work plan
