Job description

The future of aviation has ambitious goals. Global air traffic is expected to continue to grow in the foreseeable future. At the same time, reducing the climate impact of aviation is an urgent challenge. To this end, aircraft concepts utilizing new energy carriers such as batteries and hydrogen are being explored. These new power systems can impact flight performance, aircraft performance and overall airline operations. Despite these challenges, it is important that these technologies find the right market niche in multi-fuel fleet operations, ideally at the time of their initial launch.

As a PhD student at Delft University of Technology, your main challenge will be to develop models and tools to determine the optimal aircraft topside requirements to facilitate the integration and widespread adoption of sustainable technologies, taking into account their practical limitations and future potential.

In this research project, the following three aspects will be considered:

The research will utilize and extend existing open-source air traffic data as input for fleet strategic planning and topside requirements selection.
Looking into the future of aviation involves many uncertainties. Therefore, we seek a methodology that will lead to robust solutions under different future scenarios.
Flight performance and operational constraints of hydrogen and (hybrid) electric aircraft have to be taken into account.

You will develop mathematical and computational models to predict scenarios for the coming decades and perform strategic aviation planning. You will build on existing research and work closely with colleagues in our department who are studying the future operation of sustainable energy. Where necessary, we will liaise with industry partners and other departments in the College to enhance research.

Alongside your research, you will be involved in writing scientific papers and participating in international conferences. In addition, you will supervise laboratory work and support MSc students in the Operations & Environment (O) department during their final year research.

Your team and career development

You will join an interdisciplinary and internationally diverse team of about 60 dedicated assistant professors, associate professors, lecturers, project managers, PhD students and postdocs. Our goal is to develop models and tools that integrate our expertise to enable future adaptable, efficient, safe and sustainable air transport operations. We foster an open, collaborative and supportive work culture where knowledge is shared, people help each other and social connections are made.

You will receive comprehensive training and career development support to help you grow as a researcher. In addition, the PhD will provide you with a strong foundation for career opportunities in academia, the aerospace industry and policy-making sectors focused on sustainable aviation.

offer requirements

You enjoy effectively utilizing your analytical and computational skills to provide insights into the development of the next generation of sustainable aircraft. You value scientific work based on open data and work well both independently and in international interdisciplinary teams. In addition, you are keen to mentor MSc students and contribute to educational activities while further developing your skills.

You also possess

A master’s degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, or another related field.
Strong modeling and Python programming skills.
Excellent oral and written English language skills, as you will work in an international and diverse community, participate in English-taught doctoral education programs, and publish research articles. For more details, please see the Graduate School Admission Requirements.
You will ideally be able to start in the second quarter of 2025 or no later than the third quarter (July-August).

offer benefits

We offer

A vibrant and impactful research environment with the opportunity to contribute to shaping sustainable aviation.
Access to top-notch research facilities and collaboration with leading experts in the field.
