Job description

In the Department of AAU Energy at the Faculty of Engineering and Science, there is a vacant PhD position affiliated with a general research project. The PhD position can start on April 1, 2026 or shortly thereafter. The position duration is three years.

Your work tasks: The research focuses on grid and market integration of hybrid energy parks. The position belongs to the ‘Electronic Power Grids’ research group, and the PhD student will be placed in the ‘Power Electronic Systems Integration and Materials’ section.

Who we are: AAU Energy is a dynamic and international research department at Aalborg University, dedicated to developing clean and sustainable energy systems. Our research covers electrical, thermal, and mechanical energy technologies, working closely with industrial and academic partners to address real-world energy challenges. The department is located in Aalborg and Esbjerg, with this position based at the Aalborg campus. AAU Energy has approximately 300 employees from different national backgrounds, including 25 administrative staff, and regularly hosts 30–40 visiting researchers from around the world. We offer state-of-the-art laboratories and workshop facilities, as well as a collaborative environment that supports innovation, knowledge sharing, and career development.

Your competence requirements: Candidates should have an electrical engineering background and possess fundamental knowledge of modern power systems based on renewable energy. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge in the following areas:
– Modeling of renewable generation assets, flexible power loads, and energy storage systems;
– Energy management systems.

Experience with data processing, statistical analysis, and machine learning techniques is an advantage.
Proficiency in MathWorks suite (MATLAB etc.), C/C++, and Python programming is required.

Qualification requirements: The PhD stipend is awarded to persons holding a Master’s degree. PhD studies normally last 3 years. A prerequisite for obtaining the stipend is that the candidate must be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with Ministerial Order No. 1124 of 19 September 2025 (regarding PhD programs at universities and certain higher artistic educational institutions). According to this order, the progress of PhD students will be assessed regularly.
