Job description

PhD position in the European Communities Research Council (ERC) CoG project NEPHRON. We are looking for a PhD student to join our team at the MERLN Institute for Technology-Inspired Regenerative Medicine, Maastricht University, The Netherlands, to work on the European Research Council – Consolidator funded project NEPHRON (Network for the cultivation of environmentally-bio-printed human kidney organs). The PhD student will work on cutting-edge research in in vitro model development methods, in particular bioprinting methods for the creation of in vitro kidney models. PhD students will conduct their research in an intellectually stimulating and multidisciplinary environment. Program Embedded in the MERLN Institute for Technology-Inspired Regenerative Medicine The MERLN Institute is dedicated to the development of challenging new technologies to advance the field of tissue and organ repair and regeneration through the development of high-throughput materials platforms to screen for cell-biomaterial interactions MERLN consists of an interdisciplinary team of researchers in the fields of (stem cell) biology, materials engineering MERLN scientists have established an extensive network of collaborations with research institutes in the Netherlands and abroad, as well as with several biomedical companies (including their own spin-offs), as entrepreneurship is strongly promoted.

Master’s degree with excellent grades in previous studies and courses and work experience in one or more relevant fields (e.g., biomanufacturing, biomedical engineering, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, or equivalent title). Candidates who have completed a Bachelor’s degree in a country (e.g., the U.S.) where a Ph.D. degree is normally available directly are welcome to apply without a Master’s degree, provided they demonstrate substantial independent research experience. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential. Knowledge of Dutch is not required. Key Expertise Extensive experience in the fields of biomanufacturing, in vitro model development, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Experience in bioprinting, biomaterial preparation and characterization. Cell culture expertise and related assays. Knowledge of biomaterials science. Knowledge and experience in microscopy, image processing and analysis.

As part of the ERC CoG program NEPHRON at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed at the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. The position is graded according to the UFO PhD profile, with a monthly salary of €2,901.00 in the first year and €3,707.00 in the fourth year (based on a full-time work week of 38 hours). In addition to the monthly salary, there is a vacation allowance of 8.0% and a year-end bonus of 8.3%. The duration of the employment contract is 12 months and the scope of work is 1.0 full-time. The contract may be renewed for a further three years subject to favourable evaluation.
