Program Description

The Institute for Biomedical Ethics and the History of Medicine (IBME) is part of the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich and is the medical track of the PhD Program in Biomedical Ethics and Law, a joint program of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich. Since 2009, IBME has been a WHO Collaborating Center for Bioethics, providing ethical advice on a range of issues related to global health. The PhD position being recruited will be part of the project “SHARED-VSC: Leveraging Resources to Support and Guide Access to Healthcare for Variants of Sex Characteristics (VSC)/Androgynous Individuals” funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).The Stiftung Gesundheitskompass is a Swiss non-profit organization that provides individuals with complex health issues with ethical case management and interprofessional support to promote sustainable, patient-centered healthcare solutions. The PhD students will be supervised by doctoral supervisors Dr. Jürg Streuli, Dr. Eva De Clercq and Dr. Cynthia Kraus.

Your responsibilities

We are seeking a PhD candidate to join our interdisciplinary team to co-create Shared Decision Making (SDM) tools and Decision Aid resources to support patients with brain injury and their families throughout their journey. This includes designing innovative digital tools for a “Decision Aid Library” and developing a training program for “Healthcare Coaches” who guide patients and families through care decisions. The Ph.D. candidate will use mixed methods, including Delphi surveys and participatory design methods, to ensure that materials and training reflect the needs and values of affected communities.

Your Key Tasks

Coordinate Delphi surveys with experts and stakeholders to identify best practices for SDM.
Collaborate with users and healthcare professionals to develop and evaluate decision aid prototypes.
Analyze data using a thematic approach and compile insights into accessible digital formats.
Document and present research findings in English.
Collaborate with healthcare professionals, supporting organizations, and the program’s interdisciplinary advisory board.
Assisted in the creation and implementation of training modules for SDM coaches in healthcare organizations.
Assisted in the creation of a virtual living library of real life narratives.

Your Profile

We are looking for a candidate who has a deep understanding of the personal, ethical, and societal issues of developing a brain injury and who wishes to further their qualifications by pursuing a doctorate in medicine (PhD/Dr. sc. med):

Master’s Degree in Bioethics, Philosophy, Public Health, Social Sciences, Nursing Science, Medicine or other related field.
Excellent academic performance
Experience with qualitative research methods
Proficiency in German and/or French (Italian a plus)
Excellent English language skills (written and spoken).
Willingness to work in a collaborative interdisciplinary team and contribute to empirical research projects
High level of intrinsic motivation and enthusiasm
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
