Delft University of Technology recruits for a PhD position in Optical Metrology

Website Delft University of Technology

Job description

This exciting PhD opportunity is both experimental and computational. It deals with a number of fundamental problems in the field of optics. One of these is the determination of the spatially varying refractive index distribution of an unknown sample, analogous to refractive index “chromatography”. This is a key step towards freeform gradient index optics. The latter provides a novel perspective on optical design, utilizing inverse design to achieve tailored refractive indices.

The PhD program is part of the AWAVE project and uses a multidisciplinary approach with large teams from Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Twente and industrial partners. It is therefore a diverse training platform with international appeal.

offer requirements

Master’s degree in physics, engineering or mathematics, preferably related to optics.
Strong background in math and physics.
Experimental skills, in particular optics-related skills, and more specifically, preferably optical metrology skills.
Programming skills in MATLAB, Python and/or C++ are desirable.
Interest in multidisciplinary research, optics and numerical modeling.
Curiosity and initiative to solve problems from different perspectives.
Solid knowledge of the English language and strong oral and written communication skills.

It is desirable to have
Experience in publishing or research.
Dutch language skills.

offer benefits

PhD candidates will in principle be offered a 4-year appointment, but will be offered in the form of 2 employment contracts. The first contract will be for 1.5 years with a formal go/no-go progress assessment within 15 months. If all goes well and performance requirements are met, a supplementary contract of 2.5 years will be signed.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Dutch University Collective Labor Agreement and increase from €2,872 per month in the first year to €3,670 in the fourth year. As a PhD student, you will be enrolled in the Graduate School of Delft University of Technology. The Graduate School of Delft University of Technology has an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and mentors to provide you with an inspiring research environment. The doctoral education program is designed to develop your transferable, discipline-relevant and research skills.
Delft University of Technology offers customizable remuneration packages, discounts on health insurance and a monthly allowance for work expenses. Flexible working hours can be arranged.
