We are looking for a
Doctoral Researcher for the Finnish Design Promotion Program (2-year funded position)
The Department of Design is looking for a doctoral researcher who is interested in carrying out research at the intersection of design integration and design education in order to support the development and research activities carried out through the Finnish Design Promotion Program. The Finnish Design Promotion Program is a joint educational research and development program between the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture and the Finnish technology industry to support the work-life transition of design students and to promote the employment of design students in Finnish industry (Finnish Design Promotion Program | Aalto University).
The duration of the doctoral degree at the Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture is expected to be four years. When applying for the position, applicants are also required to apply to the doctoral program at the Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture through the Faculty’s general call (preferred) or during the six-month probationary period of the position.
For more information about the PhD program in Art, Science and Technology and how to apply to study for a PhD, click here: PhD program in Art, Design and Architecture at Aalto | Aalto University. When applying to the program, please indicate your interest in the position (Finnish Design Driving Doctoral Fellow) in the header of the research proposal.
Your role and objectives
As a PhD researcher, you will be involved in researching the development and educational activities carried out through the Initiative, as well as carrying out other research within the wider areas of interest of the Initiative. Advancing your doctoral studies and related research is the focus of this position. However, as a PhD researcher, you are also expected to contribute to teaching and to participate in the management and research activities of the Initiative.
In many industries, design is often cited as the key to a company’s ability to remain competitive and innovative – it is an integral part of developing products, deepening collaborations with customers, and expanding into new markets. In critically examining the underlying premises of these claims, we were interested in working with Finnish Design Push to better understand the process by which companies, especially small and medium-sized tech companies, become interested in design and acquire design competence. We were also interested in understanding how design education can help students acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and interest to meet the challenges and succeed in a career as a designer in a technology company.
Building on this foundation, we invite PhD project research proposals to further our understanding of these topics within the broader research areas of design management, design policy, design integration, design methodology, design education and strategic design.
Your network and team
As a PhD researcher in the Department of Design, you will work in a multidisciplinary and international environment of researchers, faculty, and students who are all passionate about design. Click here to find out more about the Department of Design:Department of Design, Aalto University
Your experience and ambitions
A Master’s degree in design, design management, business, education or other related field.
Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with other researchers on assigned tasks.
Ability to complete a PhD in four years.
Proficiency in English. Proficiency in one of the Nordic languages will be considered an advantage, taking into account the benchmarking activities carried out through the Initiative.
Knowledge and experience in academic skills, with research and publication experience preferred.
We offer
The position is a fixed-term position for two years to carry out full-time doctoral research. Continued funding is available at the end of the period.
