This position is a PhD scholarship within the Department of Materials and Production at the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Aalborg University. The scholarship can start from March 1, 2026, or shortly thereafter, with a duration of 3 years.

The PhD position is affiliated with the SUSTAIN research group (Sustainable Manufacturing Systems). The project focuses on the implementation of circular economy in manufacturing companies, considering circularity assessment, as well as its interrelationships with environmental impacts, products, business models, and supply chains.

The objective of the PhD project is to analyze the challenges faced by industry in developing and implementing circular manufacturing, and to identify and develop methods, models, and tools that can accelerate the industry’s transition to circular manufacturing. Particular attention is given to identifying, analyzing, and evaluating circular options through circularity assessment practices, while also considering the company’s current products, manufacturing capabilities, and capacities.

Candidates must hold an engineering Master’s degree and have solid knowledge in the field of Circular Economy and Circular Production.

The PhD project is expected to include in-depth case studies of multiple manufacturing companies, involving various types of data collection. Therefore, the PhD student needs to be proficient in applying a variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods.

A prerequisite for obtaining the scholarship is that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the Ministerial Order No. 1124 of 19 September 2025 (regarding PhD programs at universities and certain higher artistic educational institutions).
