Postdoctoral Position in Large-Scale Modeling and Simulation of Mixed-Phase Clouds at Chalmers University of Technology

Website Chalmers University of Technology

Job description

{‘project_introduction’: “This position is open in the Division of Fluid Dynamics at the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology. The research in the Division of Fluid Dynamics covers turbulence (compressible and incompressible), multiphase flows, aeronautical acoustics, and turbomachinery. Our research tools include both computation and experiments, with a broad range of research topics. Some projects study the smallest scales of turbulence, while others analyze and model the performance of entire gas turbines. The division is part of Chalmers’ Sustainable Transport Initiative, Chalmers e-Science Initiative, and Chalmers Energy Initiative.”, ‘about_the_research_project’: “Climate change is a major socio-economic challenge, and climate modeling is our only scientific tool for predicting Earth’s future climate. Clouds play a critical role in weather and climate prediction, precipitation formation, and the water cycle. According to reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), cloud modeling is one of the least understood areas in climate science and is listed as ‘one of the most urgent scientific problems requiring attention.’ Clouds are considered the largest source of uncertainty in climate predictions because accurately simulating cloud processes from small scales (microphysical processes) to nanometer scales in global climate models with kilometer-scale resolution is extremely complex.”, ‘research_approach’: ‘The research methodology for this position involves collaboration with the Department of Space, Earth and Environment at Chalmers, using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) code to simulate turbulent clouds. The project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the name MIXCLOUDS. The main objectives include:\n- Advancing the understanding of turbulence influence in mixed-phase clouds\n- Improving current subgrid-scale models in LES simulations’, ‘your_responsibilities’: ‘You will play a central role in the project development and be responsible for the implementation, validation, and data analysis of numerical tools. You will develop your own scientific concepts and communicate research results orally and in writing. Your research activities will contribute new knowledge to the field, particularly through publishing papers in scientific journals and presenting results at international conferences.’, ‘contract_terms’: ‘This is a full-time temporary postdoctoral position, initially for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. A valid residence permit must be provided upon starting the position; otherwise, the offer may be withdrawn.’}

offer requirements

{‘mandatory_requirements’: [‘A doctoral degree (PhD) or equivalent foreign degree in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering, Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field. This qualification must be fulfilled by the time of the employment decision.’, ‘Good written and oral communication skills in English.’], ‘desired_qualifications’: [‘Some teaching experience, and demonstrated good potential in research and education.’], ‘qualifications_that_will_strengthen_your_application’: [‘A doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree obtained within three years before the application deadline.’]}
