Job description
PhD: modeling coastal households for climate justice and adaptation
.
Projects
Your Functions
Those who are least affected by climate change are the first to be affected by it. This is particularly true for vulnerable and marginalized groups in coastal areas, who live in areas at risk of flooding, salt intrusion or coastal erosion. At the same time, adaptation measures tend to target areas of high economic value, neglecting the most vulnerable groups and further exacerbating inequalities. Through your PhD thesis, you will deepen our understanding of the drivers, conditions and dependencies of household (in)equality in coastal climate risk, and relate this to government adaptation decisions.
The PhD project is a contribution to the broader Coastal Climate Adaptation Pathways project. As part of the PhD project, you will engage in and further develop the Dynamic Climate Impacts Adaptation Model (DYNAMO).DYNAMO is an agent-based model that captures adaptation actions and interactions of households and governments and how they are affected by changing climate risks. You will (1) adapt DYNAMO to represent vulnerable and marginalized households; and (2) apply DYNAMO to specific case studies to analyze the interactive effects between government adaptation strategies and household or community responses.
Additionally, to bring the science to society, you will develop an open-source modeling toolkit that can be used by social partners to analyze the distribution of benefits from adaptation actions. During your PhD, you will have the opportunity to test the toolkit in workshops organized in case study regions outside Europe.
During the PhD program, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with other PhDs and social partners on issues of climate justice, climate adaptation and climate risk. You will work at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) and be part of a vibrant PhD community of around 60 PhD students.
Your responsibilities
Promote our scientific and social understanding of the equitable adaptation of vulnerable families to the coastal zone
Establish and maintain professional contacts with social partners
Disseminate your research findings through academic publications, conference presentations and engagement with relevant stakeholders
Contribute to IVM’s teaching and learning activities</br
Your profile
You enjoy using models to generate knowledge
Since DYNAMO is written in Python, you have some experience with Python
You feel connected to topics such as climate justice, flood risk, and adaptive behavior
You have a Master’s degree in a relevant subject area (e.g., environmental studies, hydrology, climate science) or a relevant methodological area (e.g., computer science, econometrics, complex systems science). This list is not exhaustive, so please apply if you believe your master’s degree meets the requirements
We recognize that everyone brings a unique set of skills, expertise, and ways of thinking. So, even if you don’t quite meet all the requirements, we’re happy to invite applications from anyone who does</job_requirements
