Faculty of Law The core mission of the Faculty of Law at Radboud University is education and research. The academic education offered focuses on the training of well-rounded lawyers and on postgraduate programs for lawyers. The Center for Immigration Law is looking for a talented and motivated PhD candidate for the project “Immigration, Law and the State”: transnational forms of legal consciousness between Poland, Ukraine and the Netherlands. You will be part of an internationally renowned interdisciplinary research center where legal scholars and social scientists will engage in migration-related research. Migrants are often perceived as having less trust in the state than native citizens. This PhD program aims to provide new insights into the experiences of transnational migrants in relation to law and state institutions, seeking to explain migrants’ trust, or lack thereof, in the state, as well as their sense of law: how they experience, navigate, and give meaning to law and state institutions. What are the experiences of immigrants from different backgrounds, with different immigration statuses, and in different social positions with regard to state institutions? What role do immigration processes play in shaping immigrants’ legal consciousness? As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to answering these research questions. The project will focus on Ukrainian migrants living in the Netherlands and Poland. You will conduct fieldwork in both countries (the Netherlands and Poland), using a combination of interviews and ethnography to gain insights into migrants’ experiences of dealing with the law and state institutions in different areas of their lives. In order to contextualize the data from the fieldwork, you will also conduct legal research on national and EU legal frameworks.
