PhD position in catalytic conversion of syngas to fine chemicals recruited at the University of Amsterdam

job description

apply here:

The Mobile Chemistry Group at the Van’t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to contribute to cutting-edge research on the catalytic conversion of syngas to fine chemicals. This project is part of a broader effort to establish a sustainable production chain for green chemicals, with a particular focus on the utilization of syngas streams rich in unreacted CO₂. You will investigate catalytic processes that can efficiently convert syngas into high-value fine chemicals, explore the direct use of syngas containing residual CO₂ to minimize separation costs, conduct proof-of-concept experiments using commercially available syngas mixtures followed by validation using syngas generated in pilot plants, and contribute to the industrial feasibility of photocatalytic syngas production by identifying highly profitable applications in fine chemicals Contribute to the industrial feasibility of photocatalytic syngas production. In addition, the project will develop new technologies for continuous flow methods for sustainable processing. This includes optimizing process control for syngas conversion, reactor scalability and photo-assisted reaction efficiency. This work will build on recent advances in photoreactor systems, using automation and modular design to accelerate catalyst screening and reaction optimization.

offer requirements

Master’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related field; ability and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team; strong desire to work with the latest technologies, such as flow chemistry or automation; motivation to solve challenging research problems; team player; strong oral and written English.
