University of Bergen Recruitment for PhD Research Fellowships in Archaeology Program Description The Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion invites applications for a PhD position in archaeology to start in August 2025 or on a mutually agreed date. The position is for a fixed term of four years. The PhD fellowship will be linked to the interdisciplinary research group Medieval History – Religion and Everyday Life, whose focus and interest is the study of ecclesiastical organizations, including monasteries and hospitals, using a variety of sources in an interdisciplinary context. The group is also interested in medieval religious practices and the transition from pagan to Christian societies. The doctoral fellowship will focus on the materiality of Christianity and its material remains in Norway, but there is also the possibility of research in a larger comparative context. We are looking for an archaeologist who wishes to carry out a project related to one or more of the following themes: the Christianization of Norway, its manifestations and impact on landscape and society. Material remains of churches/monasteries/hospitals and their significance in local and regional society (architecture, building materials and other physical traces such as burials, documents, etc.). Reflections of medieval religious beliefs and daily life through a variety of different types of primary sources. About the PhD Position and Research TrainingThe main purpose of the PhD position is to obtain a doctoral degree, which qualifies one to engage in independent research and other work requiring The main purpose of a doctoral position is to obtain a doctoral degree and thus qualify for independent research and other work requiring specific competencies. The duration of the doctoral position is four years, 25% of which is devoted to other career-enhancing tasks related to teaching, dissemination of results and administration. A plan for this portion of the work will be developed in collaboration with the department at the beginning of the employment period. As a PhD student, you are required to participate in the educational program of the Faculty of Humanities. The PhD program consists of a training component of 30 ECTS, which corresponds to one semester. This means that two and a half of the four years are devoted to the research project itself. Qualifications and personal qualities Applicants must hold a Norwegian Master’s degree in archaeology or an equivalent foreign degree. Obtaining a Master’s degree by the application deadline is a condition of employment. Foreign degree applicants will be evaluated according to the regulations of the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT) and the PhD program plan of the Faculty of Humanities. Applicants must be able to work independently in a structured manner and have strong collaborative skills. Applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English.
