PhD Position in Economics Project Description The Department of General Economics at the Erasmus School of Economics is offering a full-time PhD position starting in September 2025 for four years. The position is open to candidates interested in applied microeconomics, especially topics related to labor economics, development economics, personnel economics and organizational economics. Position DescriptionWe are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate in Economics to join our research team to work on cutting-edge topics related to labor market inequality. The successful candidate will explore issues such as income and wealth disparities, access to opportunity, and the role of organizations and public policy in addressing labor market inequality. The position offers the opportunity to engage in theoretical and empirical research (applied econometrics), collaborate with leading scholars, and contribute to academic and policy debates around economic inequality. The position is open to candidates interested in any type of experimental approach (naturalistic, field, laboratory or survey). Expected outcomes are at least three publications. We aim to publish in top journals in economics or management.

We welcome PhD candidates who are interested in pursuing a career in research. To become a PhD candidate with us, you need to be admitted to the Graduate School of Economics at the Erasmus School of Economics, the Tinbergen Institute or the Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM). Applicants should have a solid background in economics and quantitative methods and a strong interest in labor market dynamics. General Requirements Master’s or Research Master’s degrees in Economics, Econometrics, Mathematics or Physics are preferred Candidates who have received a Master of Science or a Master of Arts degree must have successfully completed a 1-year program at the graduate school of which they are a member (research qualification at the Tinbergen Institute or a program at ERIM). High academic achievement in undergraduate and master’s studies A statement of interest and strong motivation for scientific research is indicated in the statement of purpose. All entering PhD students must take the GRE. All Ph.D. applicants are required to provide valid scores on the GRE (Revised) General Test (all 3 parts: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Writing): Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing). Successful applicants typically rank in the top 10% on the quantitative section of the GRE; applicants with Q scores below 160 will not be considered. Excellent English language skills (IELTS/TOEFL). Therefore, students whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate English language proficiency by holding a degree from a Dutch university or an institution that uses English as the language of instruction, or by achieving a minimum score of 100 on the TOEFL iBT, or a minimum score of 7 on the IELTS.
