PhD Position in Theoretical Particle Physics

Program

Have you ever wondered how the most fundamental constituent elements of the universe interact under extreme conditions? Quantum chromodynamics is the key: it binds quarks and gluons together to form the protons and neutrons that make up our world. Under extreme conditions, this binding is overcome to form a new state of matter, the quark-gluon plasma. These extreme conditions existed in the early universe and can be temporarily reproduced in heavy-ion collisions.

During your PhD in Theoretical Particle Physics, you will gain insight into the cutting-edge world of energy correlators. These powerful new observables have recently attracted the attention of the community for their ability to separate physical phenomena at different scales and their robustness to background.

You will work on the following

You will study how energy correlators provide new insights into the microscopic properties of quark-gluon plasmas. Other applications of energy correlators will also be investigated. You will be part of a research team that currently consists of 2 postdocs, 1 PhD and several MSc students working within the broader Nehruv theory group. The program involves close collaboration with researchers in Europe and the US and provides an exciting and dynamic research environment.

As a PhD researcher, you will carry out cutting-edge theoretical research in particle physics while developing essential academic skills such as scientific writing, conference presentations and time management. While the program already has an initial direction, you will have considerable freedom to chart your own research path within a broader range of topics.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Conduct independent research in theoretical particle physics and publish in peer-reviewed international journals.
Extend professional knowledge and acquire new theoretical and technical skills through self-study and participation in PhD schools.
Contribute to the discussion in the scientific community by presenting your research results at conferences and seminars.
Participate in teaching and assist in the teaching of Bachelor’s and Master’s programs (approximately one course per year).
(Optional) Supervise students (if interested) and co-supervise BSc and MSc theses.

This position offers you an excellent opportunity to develop as a researcher in a stimulating and collaborative environment. You will work closely with leading experts in the field and have the flexibility to explore topics that match your interests.

What we ask of you

We are looking for a PhD student who is eager to explore new research directions in theoretical particle physics, develop new skills and use creativity to solve challenging problems. A PhD student’s journey naturally has its ups and downs, so motivation, perseverance and flexibility are essential qualities.

Your experience and profile

MSc in Physics.
Solid foundation in quantum field theory, including some experience in non-abelian gauge theory and loop calculations.
Strong English communication skills.

Some programming or symbolic math skills (e.g. Mathematica) would be helpful, but not required.

offer待遇

We offer you

A temporary contract for 38 hours per week for 4 years (initial contract is for 18 months and will be extended to 4 years upon satisfactory evaluation). The preferred start date is Fall 2025. We will draft an educational program that will include participation in courses and (international) conferences. We would also like you to assist in the teaching of undergraduate and master’s students.

The gross monthly salary ranges from €2901 to €3707 (P scale), based on a 38-hour work week, depending on relevant experience.UFO profile PhD applies. A favorable tax agreement, the “30% rule”, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Dutch University Collective Labor Agreement applies.
